Tell us, what got you interested in joining the ranks of professional voice actresses?\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n

[\/vc_custom_heading][vc_column_text text_lead=”small” uncode_shortcode_id=”150460″]I\u2019ve been a stage performer and stand up comedian since the early 2000s. Voice acting was a natural extension of performing arts for me. When I was getting started, I had to learn to tone down my projection because I\u2019m a naturally loud speaker. In noisy comedy clubs, as a host and comedian, I would be <\/span>booming<\/span><\/i> on the mic. Recording commercial voiceovers meant learning mic techniques and talking to 1 person, grasping the concept of <\/span>being conversational.<\/span><\/i> So I really had to adjust. <\/span><\/p>\n

Stand up comedy is about <\/span>connecting <\/span><\/i>with the audience, similarly with voiceover work. <\/span>Being confident with characterizing different voices and a variety of people is something I learned in my storytelling while doing stand up. Why did you choose to become a voice actress?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

[\/vc_custom_heading][vc_column_text text_lead=”small”]I love working on multiple projects at once but sometimes scatter my energies. So I was always doing some voiceovers, but I wasn\u2019t as focused. Then, the COVID-19 pandemic pushed me into investing in a professional home studio. Before the pandemic, I was visiting various studios in the city, multiple times a week. COVID-19 made it clear: have the right equipment, or else you can\u2019t be heard or be competitive.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe time had come.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

My friend found a custom booth online and my husband and I decided to purchase it, buy a good ventilation system and hire professionals to assemble it. That has been the best decision for my career.<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column_inner][\/vc_row_inner][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row row_height_percent=”0″ override_padding=”yes” h_padding=”7″ top_padding=”2″ bottom_padding=”2″ overlay_alpha=”50″ gutter_size=”3″ column_width_percent=”100″ shift_y=”0″ z_index=”0″][vc_column width=”1\/1″][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1\/2″][vc_custom_heading uncode_shortcode_id=”194143″]<\/p>\n

In what areas would you like to improve as a voice actress and why?<\/h2>\n

[\/vc_custom_heading][vc_column_text text_lead=”small”]I\u2019d like to improve in longer explainer videos, audiobooks and retail copy. Long-form corporate narration requires a steady technique, and I tend to over enunciate words. I plan on studying Carrie Olsen\u2019<\/a>s technique and taking a few of her workshops. I also have to improve my direct marketing and marketing plans- I have resources, but I need to review them. <\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_single_image media=”94849″ media_width_percent=”100″ uncode_shortcode_id=”169179″][\/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1\/2″][vc_custom_heading uncode_shortcode_id=”865246″]<\/p>\n

What makes you nervous about becoming a voice actress?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

[\/vc_custom_heading][vc_column_text text_lead=”small”]I\u2019m discouraged every day. When I compare my interest and understanding of technical aspects of recording and voice over, it\u2019s true – I don\u2019t know as much as others in the voiceover industry.<\/span><\/p>\n

I give myself a pep talk and say, \u201cone thing at a time, one day at a time.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

There\u2019s a learning curve and I realize I have to be gentle and encouraging with myself. I took two workshops to learn the DAW (digital audio workstation) Reaper<\/a>. It’s still \u201cgreek to me.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

So I said to myself, \u201cjust learn a different DAW for now.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I had issues with port forwarding for Source Connect. My cable provider made it a nightmare. Two days and they couldn\u2019t help me, so I turned to my online VO community, Voice Actors of NYC<\/a> (VANYC). If you don\u2019t know something, just ask.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Fellow voiceover talent and tech folks were more than willing to help me. <\/span>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column_inner][\/vc_row_inner][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row row_height_percent=”0″ override_padding=”yes” h_padding=”7″ top_padding=”0″ bottom_padding=”2″ overlay_alpha=”50″ gutter_size=”3″ column_width_percent=”100″ shift_y=”0″ z_index=”0″][vc_column width=”1\/1″][vc_custom_heading uncode_shortcode_id=”105661″]<\/p>\n

What’s been a very memorable lesson you’ve learned in 2020?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

[\/vc_custom_heading][vc_column_text text_lead=”small”]It\u2019s really important to keep track of what and who you are auditioning for. Account for how many auditions you submit for. A fellow actor explained that <\/span><\/p>\n

“out of 200 auditions, he booked 5.”<\/strong><\/p>\n

  1. I\u2019d like to be more familiar with how different genres of voice-overs \u201csound\u201d. Auto ads have a \u201csound.\u201d Most retail ads have a certain style.<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. I also want to explore animation and push my voice to become more versatile.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. I also want to advance to higher, easier levels of editing with a better DAW.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    [\/vc_custom_heading][vc_column_text text_lead=”small”]Carin Gilfry<\/a>, the founder of Voice Actors of NYC<\/a>, inspires me. She inspires me to keep learning and connecting with other professionals.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
